A Guide to Eloping in Grand Teton National Park

So you have decided to elope in Grand Teton National Park. That is a wonderful choice! This park is brimming with beautiful scenery to create the elopement of your dreams. Now it’s time to plan all the details.

What is the best time to elope in Grand Teton National Park?

Grand Teton National Park is in the Teton Mountain Range of northwestern Wyoming. That means the weather is very unpredictable, and chilly to cold almost year round, besides of course the summer months of July and August. That is not to say that is the only time you can elope here. The snow can be a wonderful backdrop to your wedding. Let’s look at the pros and cons of eloping in Grand Teton National Park in each season.

Summer (July-August)

Let’s start with the most popular season in the park: summer. The weather during the summer months is going to be the best weather you will get in the park. Warm, sunny skies, and best of all, a little more predictable than the rest of the year. Thus, that makes eloping in the summer time a safe bet. Of course, with good weather and summer vacation comes lots of tourist. So it will be the busiest time of the year, and will not be as private as if you choose another season. Not to mention, in this season, only one ceremony is allowed per day, so you will need to get your permit as early as possible. It also is important to note that it is wildfire season in California, so the possibility of smoke is real. However, if you want warm weather and predictability, this is the season for you.

Fall (September–October)

Fall is one of the most popular seasons for elopements in Grand Teton National Park, and for good reason. The crowds start to disperse and the colors start to change, giving you a peaceful and gorgeous golden ceremony. With that said, it starts to be a little more unpredictable, and it is possible that you will have some snow at this time. If the snow doesn’t scare you and you want a romantic and autumnal vibe, this is the perfect time for you. Just note, this is also a time when the park allows only one ceremony is per day, so plan in advance and apply for your permit early.

Winter (November–March)

Winter is the longest season of the year in the mountainous climate of northwestern Wyoming, and it is also the harshest. With that said, Grand Teton National Park transforms into a winter wonderland with gorgeous snow-capped mountains and snow covered fields. Less hiking locations are available, but you do get the possibility of some winter activities like skiing and dogsledding. There is not a limit of ceremonies in a day, but there is a limit to the number of people who can come. Only 12 people are allowed during a ceremony in this season. That shouldn’t be a problem for an elopement, but it is important to make you aware. Winter is the perfect time for an adventurous couple who really wants a snowy wedding.

Spring (April–June):

After the long winter, the park starts to thaw out in the spring months of April and May. By June, it should be completely thawed, besides maybe the peaks, and the wildflowers will be in full bloom. This is prime season for spotting wildlife, as it is still not super busy, but it is starting to warm up again. Of course, May and June’s flowers come because of the showers, so be prepared for rain. If that doesn’t scare you, then this may be the perfect season for you. Though, just like in the winter, they only allow small ceremonies (up to 12 people).

What are the best locations to elope in Grand Teton National Park?

Now that you chose the season, it’s time to choose the ceremony location. The park is full of amazing spots, but it is important to note that not all spots are open in every season, and some spots need site specific ceremony location permits. You can look at that detailed information here on the national park service website.

Keeping that in mind, let’s look at some of the best locations for saying “I do” in Grand Teton National Park.

1. Schwabacher’s Landing

This is one of the most iconic spots in the park, and for good reason. Schwabacher’s Landing offers stunning views of the Tetons reflected in the Snake River. The morning light here is unbeatable, making it a favorite spot for photographers. It’s also relatively easy to access, with just a short walk from the parking area. If you’re looking for those classic reflection shots with towering mountains in the background, this is the place to be.

2. Jenny Lake

If you want a mix of water, mountains, and forest, Jenny Lake is the perfect location. There are multiple spots around the lake where you can have a private ceremony, including some beautiful overlooks and quiet beaches. The lake itself is crystal clear, reflecting the surrounding peaks, and in the early morning, it’s incredibly peaceful. Jenny Lake also offers some amazing opportunities for post-ceremony hiking and adventuring.

3. Mormon Row

For couples wanting a bit of historical charm in their elopement photos, Mormon Row is a great option. The old Moulton Barns set against the backdrop of the Tetons create a unique, rustic setting. It’s a favorite spot for photographers thanks to its wide-open views and beautiful contrast between the historic structures and the natural landscape. Just be prepared for some tourists during the busy season as it’s a popular spot.

4. String Lake

String Lake is another beautiful water setting, and it is less busy than Jenny Lake. However, parking is a bit difficult, so you will still want to arrive early in the busy season. It’s nestled between the mountains and surrounded by trees, providing a beautiful and intimate spot for your ceremony. The area also offers plenty of hiking trails, so you can explore the park before or after you say your vows.

5. Oxbow Bend

For sweeping panoramic views of the Tetons reflected in the Snake River, Oxbow Bend is unbeatable. It’s especially magical at sunrise, with the soft morning light spilling on the mountains. It is also one of the best parts of the park for the chance of seeing wildlife like moose, river otters, bald eagles and bears. This spot is perfect for those who really want nature to be the spotlight of their ceremony.

Where should we stay during our elopement at Grand Teton National Park?

The most common places to stay when eloping at Grand Teton National Park are in the nearby towns of Jackson and Teton Village. There are lots of private cabin options in each town, as well as resorts and hotels. It is said that Teton Village has better views and there are more mountain activities close by, while Jackson will give you the amenities of town.

What paperwork is needed for an elopement at Grand Teton National Park?

As with all national parks, you will need to apply for a special use permit. As mentioned above, the season has different restrictions. In summer and fall, only one wedding ceremony is allowed each day, and in winter and spring, only small ceremonies are allowed. Either way, you will need the special use permit, which is $200 and you must apply at least 30 days in advance, though I recommend to apply ASAP for summer and fall weddings.

Unfortunately, a wedding license is not as easy in Wyoming as in the neighboring state of Montana, as it does not allow for self-solemnization, but it’s not too difficult either. You will need to have an officiant and two witnesses to certify the marriage. I recommended that you schedule the appointment to get the marriage license one to two business days before the ceremony.

What should I wear to my elopement at Grand Teton National Park?

What you will want to wear depends on the season, but you can check on the full guide of what to wear on a hiking elopement here.

Other things to consider when eloping in Grand Teton National Park

It is important to note that as with all national parks, you must respect the public land and wildlife. Make sure to follow the Leave No Trace guidelines, and keep safe by carrying bear spray.
